Beginner UX Writer? You don’t have to do it alone
Late November 2020, I entered the world of UX writing and it has captivated me since then. The following months were spent reading TONS of blogs, listening to podcasts, attending webinars, and scouring the internet (even pages 2 & 3 on Google’s search results!) for UX writing resources.
One thing I quickly discovered: If you’re not taking any of the few available online courses, you will get overwhelmed. Thoughts like ‘Where will I start from?’ ‘Am I learning the right way?’ ‘What the heck am I doing??’ soon become your constant companions.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
If there’s one thing I learned from my conversations with fellow aspiring UX Writers, it’s that we feel there’s too much “information” about UX writing and too few “practical tasks” that can actually build a portfolio.
Usually, that’s where UX writing courses like UX Writing Hub Academy and UX Writers Collective come in. But what if you aren’t taking a course?
With UX writing becoming more popular, people from around the world are getting into field and not everyone will take the paid course route.
So for newbies like myself, who for one reason or the other are taking the self-learning approach, it is crucial that there’s a balance between reading about UX writing and practicing UX writing.
After struggling for months in my UX writing journey with little to show for it, I realized there’s a better way to approach it.
UX Writers Learn
UX Writers Learn is a weekly publication built on the abundant UX writing resources I’ve collated over time and now organized into a structured course. The course is modeled after existing UX writing courses to ensure every important topic was covered - which I’ve found helps with impostor syndrome.
It’s a publication where a summary of every topic will be provided along with links to resources (articles, books, podcasts, etc) that are useful for that particular topic. There will also be practical assignments under each topic with the goal of having a complete project for your portfolio by the end of the course.
So how does it work?
- UX Writers Learn runs here on Medium (No subscription fee needed). Plus, it is updated in real-time, meaning I will be going through the learning process as well so we can share insights, provide feedback and embark on practice projects together.
- There will be one post per week over an estimated span of 6 months (26th April till October).
- There will be a Slack channel where questions, feedback, project collaborations, and general conversations can be had. This is where the real work gets done.
Want to be a part of UX Writers Learn ?
You will need
- To have a Medium account and a Slack account
- To share; ask questions when you don’t know, answer them when you do. Always feel free to give and request for feedback
- To practice, practice, practice. Reading alone won’t turn you into a UX Writer, putting what you learn into practice will
- To be self disciplined to complete the course. It won’t be an easy ride.
- To own UX Writers Learn! Make it yours! Contribute to its success by helping fellow UX writers out in this journey.
Let’s grow together.
Knowing there are practicing UX Writers who are self-taught gives hope because though difficult to attain, it is not impossible to achieve.
